The Historical Story of Hang Tam Co

What makes Hang Tam Co truly special is the touching historical story associated with this place.

In 1972, during an intense period of the Vietnam War, a heavy bombing raid by the U.S. Air Force caused the cave entrance to collapse, trapping eight young volunteer youth workers who were on duty maintaining traffic along Road 20 Quyết Thắng. Despite continuous rescue efforts, massive rocks blocked access, making it impossible to reach them.

For several days, rescuers attempted to deliver food through small rock crevices, but eventually had to face the heartbreaking reality. The sacrifice of these eight young soldiers became a powerful symbol of courage and dedication during wartime.

Since then, the site has been respectfully known as Hang Tám Cô — “The Cave of Eight Ladies.”

A Spiritual Space Amid the Mountains

Today, Hang Tám Cô has been developed into a solemn memorial site. In front of the cave stands a small temple where visitors offer incense to honor the fallen heroes.

The atmosphere here is uniquely peaceful. Surrounded by deep green forests, the sounds of wind and birds create a sacred ambiance that often leaves visitors feeling deeply moved.

Nearby is the Trường Sơn Martyrs Memorial Temple, commemorating those who sacrificed their lives along this legendary route. It is a familiar stop for pilgrim groups, war veterans, and history enthusiasts.
