Quang Tri is a famous historical land with many relics associated with the war, including Quang Tri Citadel, Hien Luong Bridge – Ben Hai River, and especially Vinh Moc Tunnels – a unique underground construction. This is not only a historical relic but also a journey that takes visitors back to the heroic years of the nation.
During the period of 1965 – 1972, Vinh Linh became the front line of American bombs. The Vinh Moc Tunnels system was started and built entirely by human power, with rudimentary hoes and shovels.
Initially, the tunnels were only intended for shelter, but later developed into an "underground village" with a well, Hoang Cam kitchen, meeting room, infirmary and even a birthing room. Here, 17 babies were born underground, becoming a living symbol of the indomitability of people on the war.
The entire tunnel system is more than 2,000 meters long, divided into three floors from 12 to 23 meters deep underground. The tunnels have 13 entrances, of which 7 face the mountains and 6 lead to the sea, creating an extremely smart ventilation and escape system.
When visiting, visitors will go through long, narrow tunnels, clearly feeling the resilience and extraordinary determination of the people of Vinh Linh when turning the underground into a place to live and fight for many years. In particular, the space inside is still intact, helping you feel like you are "reliving" history.
Vinh Moc Tunnels are the clearest evidence of the resilient will and extraordinary creativity of the people of Quang Tri during the fierce years. This is not only a place to preserve history but also a destination to educate the tradition of patriotism for the next generation.
Today, the tunnels have become one of the outstanding tourist destinations of Quang Tri, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. This place helps you better understand the value of peace, appreciate the sacrifices of your ancestors to protect every inch of your homeland.
