Khe Sanh Coffee at 100: A Century of Resilience and a Taste of Peace

Discover how Khe Sanh’s coffee story, rooted in 1926, is being celebrated through culture, local products and a new vision for tourism in Quang Tri.

In the cool highlands of western Quang Tri, coffee is more than a crop. It is a thread through a century of change, linking family livelihoods with the landscapes and memories of Khe Sanh. On the evening of 24 October 2026, the province opened “Following the Footsteps of 100 Years of Khe Sanh Coffee” at the Van Kieu–Pa Ko Cultural House in Khe Sanh Commune, carrying that story into a new chapter.

A century that began in 1926

The centenary looks back to 1926 as the beginning of Khe Sanh’s coffee story. Since then, the highland has known conflict and recovery; coffee has grown into a distinctive local product and an important source of livelihood. The opening programme, “Khe Sanh Coffee – A Taste of Peace,” brought that passage of time to the stage through music, performance, images and archival film, from the early years to the revival of Arabica cultivation.

The event report from the Quang Tri Provincial Government Portal describes the celebration as a way to connect the region’s history with its future. The message feels especially resonant here: a cup can carry the labor of generations while standing for peace and renewal.

A festival with room to taste, learn and explore

Running from 24 to 26 October, the programme brings together displays of coffee and agricultural products, an art exhibition, a documentary on the 100-year journey, and the “Farmers’ Contest – Khe Sanh Coffee.” Visitors can also join the Khe Sanh Coffee Tour, introduced with the hopeful phrase “Make Coffee, Not War.” Each activity offers a different way to encounter the product: through its flavor, the people who grow it, or the memories preserved around it.

Meet the people behind the cup

At the opening, the province presented gifts to 30 low-income and policy-recipient households and recognized three organizations and five individuals for their contributions to specialty coffee. The gestures placed local people at the heart of the celebration, alongside the growers, cooperatives and businesses whose work carries a coffee harvest from field to cup.

Connecting coffee with the wider Khe Sanh landscape

Quang Tri’s stated direction for the coffee sector puts quality first, local identity at the center of its distinction, and growers and processors at the heart of the value chain. The plan also points to stronger farmer–cooperative–business links, applied technology, deeper processing and traceability. For visitors, the most evocative possibility is how coffee can sit within a broader journey through the highlands: coffee hills, wind farms, Van Kieu and Pa Ko villages, and historic places along Route 9. Travelers can explore more of the area through this guide to Khe Sanh’s highland scenery.

That blend of agriculture, landscape and memory gives the centenary its lasting meaning. Khe Sanh’s story is not only about looking back to 1926; it is also about shaping a peaceful, welcoming future around a cup of local coffee.
